2012 Nissan GT-R Review and Prices

Nissan’s flagship sports car is getting more power and numerous detail changes for 2012. Too bad GT-R prices are likely to go way up.

What We Know About the 2012 Nissan GT-R

Nissan Motor Corporation in Japan must have pink-slipped a few employees after the big summer-2010 news leak on the 2012 version of its flagship GT-R sports car. Various media outlets were quick to relay the intelligence, which applies mostly to the home-market 2011 models. The revised U.S. and European editions roll out as 2012 entries during calendar 2011 and are again likely to differ in some technical details, model choice, and available features. While it’s not yet clear what those differences will be, we can safely say that the 2011 U.S.-market GT-R will have an abbreviated sales run.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R is not a full redesign--way too soon for that. Rather, it’s a thorough stem-to-stern honing of the critically acclaimed all-wheel-drive twin-turbo-V6 supercar. Though none of the changes aren’t major in and of themselves, there are enough of them to warrant a new factory model code, DBA-R35. The current GT-R broke cover in late 2007 with the designation CBA-R35 and is notable as the first of its kind to be officially sold in the U.S., arriving as an early-’09 entry. Predictably, the 2012 revamp focuses on improved acceleration and dynamic performance, but it also addresses ride comfort, structural rigidity, and cockpit appointments. There’s also talk of a more-luxurious Spec-M model, though it probably won’t be sold outside Japan.

For all its many changes, the 2012 Nissan GT-R will stick with existing dimensions, basic styling, and underskin hardware. The R35 series has been a global sales hit despite the iffy global economy, so Nissan isn’t about to tamper too much. The U.S. alone snapped up 1,730 R35s in calendar ’08 and another 1,534 in ’09, not bad for a pricey, high-performance, limited-edition 2+2-seater.
